Eight James Bond Island tours from Phuket, plus one Krabi alternative, compared by boat type, real price, park fees and how long your day actually runs, from a $33 big boat to a private longtail.
What You Should Know
- A full-day boat trip into Ao Phang Nga National Park: sea-cave canoeing, lunch on board or at Koh Panyee, a beach stop, and 45 to 60 minutes on James Bond Island itself.
- Hotel pickups run 6:45 to 8:45am and boats leave Ao Po Pier or Royal Phuket Marina by 9:30am; from Kata or Karon, expect 12 to 13 hours door to door.
- Shared tours cost $33 to $155 and a private longtail $239 a person; six of the eight Phuket tours add the park fee (300 THB per adult), paid in cash at the pier.
- Canoeing means sitting while a guide paddles you through the caves, and James Bond Island is the shortest, busiest stop; the caves and lagoons are what reviewers actually rate.
James Bond Island Tours from Phuket
A James Bond Island tour from Phuket is really a day in Ao Phang Nga National Park, the bay of limestone towers north-east of the island, and the iconic rock is only one stop of five or six. The decision that shapes your day is the boat: a big boat is slower, steadier and cheaper; a speedboat fits more islands into the same hours; a longtail runs from Phang Nga's own pier with a much smaller group. This guide compares eight tours from Phuket across all three, plus one Krabi departure for readers staying on that side of the bay, so you can pick on boat, price and pace rather than on the headline photo.
The island everyone comes for is Khao Phing Kan, where scenes of the 1974 Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun were shot, and the 20-metre needle of Ko Tapu standing in the water just off it. The Phuket tours on this page land you on Khao Phing Kan. What differs is everything around it: sea-cave canoeing at Panak and Hong islands, lunch at the stilted fishing village of Koh Panyee, a beach stop to finish, and whether the park fee and lunch are in the price. Prices run from $33 on a shared big boat to $239 a person for a private longtail, with most good options between $67 and $96. If you are choosing between Phang Nga Bay and the beaches and snorkelling of the Phi Phi islands for your one boat day, our Phi Phi island tour from Phuket comparison covers the other half of that decision, and our Phi Phi speedboat tour comparison narrows it to speedboats. If the sea caves are what draw you, our Phuket kayaking guide compares the dedicated sea cave tours from Ao Po Pier. For a rest day between boat trips, our Thai cooking class, Phuket food tour and Phuket Old Town tour comparisons cover the island's food and history.

The shape of the day is consistent across operators. A minivan collects you between 6:45am and 8:45am depending on how far your hotel is from the pier, you check in and pay the park fee in cash, then spend roughly six hours moving between islands before the same van takes you home. Most of the variation is in the order of the stops, which guides change on the day to suit the tide and the crowds.
Our take (the tide decides the canoe): The sea caves at Hong and Panak islands lead into hidden lagoons through tunnels that can close at high tide. One reviewer reports not getting all the way through to the lagoon, another describes ducking under low ceilings, and a third counts themselves lucky the water was low enough to reach caves that are usually out of bounds. Nobody can book around the tide, and the guides choose the order of stops to work with it, so treat reaching the lagoon as likely rather than guaranteed.
Our take (set expectations for the famous stop): James Bond Island is a small beach crowded with boats from every operator in the bay, lined with souvenir stalls, and you cannot get close to Ko Tapu itself. The reviews that go wrong are almost always the ones that expected this stop to be the highlight. The reviews that go right are about the caves, the canoeing and the stilt village at Koh Panyee, and we would choose a tour on those.
What reviewers consistently mention
- The canoe guide paddles, you sit. Inflatable canoes take two or three guests and a local paddler who steers through the caves and takes photos. In reality, each canoe segment runs about 30 to 40 minutes. It suits non-swimmers and older guests well. It disappoints anyone who wanted exercise.
- A long day. 12 to 13 hours door to door from the west-coast beaches is common, with up to 3.5 hours in the van when several hotels are collected.
- Generous food. Lunch is the most praised item after the canoeing, on big boats and at Koh Panyee alike, with vegetarian and halal options when requested at booking.
- Monkeys at the caves. Monkeys turn up at cave and beach stops on several of these tours, and canoe paddlers sometimes steer guests toward them. They are not guaranteed, but they are among the most mentioned surprises.
- Photos for sale. Several tours carry a photographer and sell prints or files at the end; one guest reports paying about 350 THB for a framed print. It is optional, and canoe paddlers will take pictures on your own phone for free.
Best James Bond Island Tours from Phuket
The eight Phuket tours below are ordered by how confidently we would recommend them to a first-time visitor staying in Phuket, with the Krabi alternative listed last and separately. The ranking weighs review volume alongside rating, because a 5.0 from 16 guests and a 4.9 from 5,333 are not the same kind of evidence, and it weighs what the price actually covers, since six of the eight Phuket tours add a park fee on the day.
Amazing Canoeing: Big Boat & Canoeing
Two guided canoe stops, at Panak and Hong islands, a buffet lunch on board, James Bond Island and a swim and paddle boarding stop to finish, all from a larger, steadier platform than the speedboats, which may suit travellers concerned about motion. It holds 4.9 across 5,333 reviews, the deepest record of any tour here. The trade-off is time: it leaves from Ao Po Pier, and guests from Kata report a 12-hour day door to door.
Check availabilityAmazing Canoeing: James Bond Island by Speedboat
The same operator's speedboat version: Panak Island's caves, canoeing at Talu Island, lunch at the Koh Panyee fishing village, James Bond Island and a long beach stop at Naka Island, from Royal Phuket Marina. It rates 4.9 from 1,518 reviews. Its lower reviews come from guests who found the boat cramped and the stops crowded, which is the speedboat trade-off in general rather than this operator's.
Check availabilityBJ Canoeing Tour: Speedboat & Hong Island Canoe
236 of its 241 reviews are five stars, the cleanest distribution on this page, and bookings cap at 15 rather than 30. The day covers Panak Island, canoeing at Hong Island, James Bond Island, lunch at Koh Panyee, the Khao Khian rock paintings and 90 minutes on a beach. Its smaller review base is the only reason it is not higher. We'd lean toward it over the $67 Oh-Hoo speedboat: for one dollar more you get half the booking cap and a review record without the pickup complaints.
Check availabilityOh-Hoo: James Bond, Panyee, Hong & Naka
A full speedboat itinerary with coffee and tea at the marina, canoeing at Hong Island and lunch at Koh Panyee for the lowest speedboat price here. Two things to know: it needs 10 guests to run, and the last stop is two hours at Palm Beach Club (or Naka Island), so bring swimwear. Its critical reviews most often concern late or missed hotel pickups.
Check availabilityOh-Hoo: James Bond Island by Big Boat
The lowest price on this page by half, on a two-deck boat with shade and sun decks, two canoeing segments and a buffet lunch. Budget for the extras: the park fee, and 200 THB each way from Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Laguna, Rawai or Nai Harn. Reviewers rate the canoeing highly and the James Bond Island stop as crowded.
Check availabilityForeverVacation: Private Longtail Boat
The only longtail tour that cleared our checks. It is private, starts at 7:00am or 8:00am, and drives you 90 minutes to two hours (depending on traffic) to the pier in Phang Nga itself, so you reach the bay ahead of the boats coming up from Phuket. Park fees and lunch are included. Reviewers repeatedly credit the early start with beating the crowds at James Bond Island. One note: it is not cancelled for bad weather.
Check availabilitySEANERY: Luxury Boat with Sunset Dinner
A large cruise boat with assigned tables, buffet lunch, cave kayaking at Hong Island, a water slide and a light dinner as the sun goes down, with the park fee included. It rates 4.8 from 1,020 reviews. Expect a party atmosphere on the way home: a DJ plays the return leg, which most guests love and a vocal minority found too loud with nowhere quiet to go. Its critical reviews also describe a full boat and a short, late-afternoon stop at James Bond Island, when it is busiest. We wouldn't choose it for a quiet day on the water: it is a party boat with sightseeing, not a sightseeing boat with music.
Check availabilityAmazing Canoeing: Private Hong Krabi & James Bond
A private speedboat for up to 12 that covers both national parks: Hong Island in Krabi province plus Talu Island canoeing, Koh Panyee and James Bond Island. Per head it suits a group of eight or more. Lunch is not included, the park fee doubles to 600 THB per adult because two parks are visited, and it has only 16 reviews, all five stars.
Check availabilityThalassa Tour: Krabi to James Bond & Hong Islands
For readers based in Ao Nang rather than Phuket. It reaches Phang Nga Bay by sea, avoids the busiest circuit and holds 4.9 from 896 reviews, with bookings capped at 15. The trade-off is explicit: you view James Bond Island from the boat rather than landing on it. A 400-step climb to the Hong Island viewpoint is optional.
Check availabilityIf two of these appeal equally, choose by boat before operator: the boat decides how long you spend in transit, how many stops you make and how crowded the day feels far more than the company running it does.
Speedboat, Big Boat or Longtail: Which Should You Book?
The Phuket tours we compared use one of three main boat formats, and choosing the boat is most of the decision. Speedboats fit the most stops into the day. Big boats are the cheapest and the most comfortable. Longtails are the smallest group and start from Phang Nga itself, which is how they get ahead of the crowds.
James Bond Island tour by speedboat from Phuket
Speedboats leave from Royal Phuket Marina or Ao Po Pier and cover five to six stops: usually Panak Island's caves, a canoe at Hong or Talu Island, James Bond Island, lunch at Koh Panyee and a beach to finish. Three of the shared Phuket tours here are speedboats, priced $67 to $90. The ride is fast but can be bumpy in wind, and seating is fixed benches; one reviewer warns that you either face forward and see little or sit sideways, and another suggests sitting at the front for the smoothest ride. If you're prone to seasickness, a larger boat is generally the safer choice for comfort.
James Bond Island tour by big boat
Big boats are slower, so you see fewer islands, but they are stable, shaded and have room to move around. Lunch is served on deck rather than at Koh Panyee. This is the cheapest format ($33) and also the most reviewed ($96, from Amazing Canoeing). Expect a long day: our top pick lists 7 to 8 hours, and guests from the west-coast beaches report around 12 hours door to door.
James Bond Island tour by longtail boat from Phuket
The traditional wooden longtail is too slow to run from Phuket's marinas, so longtail tours drive you north to a pier in Phang Nga and board there, already inside the bay. Guests put the drive at 90 minutes to just under two hours in Phuket's traffic. That positioning is the advantage: an early start puts you at James Bond Island before the boats from Phuket arrive. We'd book this if the island itself is the point of your trip, since reviews of the early longtail starts are the only ones that consistently describe it as uncrowded. Shared longtail tours exist, but the ones we checked either had no reviews in the last six months or too few to judge, so the only longtail we list is the private ForeverVacation tour at $239 a person.
James Bond Island Tour from Krabi or Phuket?
Book from wherever you are sleeping. James Bond Island sits in Phang Nga Bay between the two, and both have good tours, but the hotel transfer is the longest part of the day already, so crossing provinces to start a tour makes it longer still.
From Phuket you have far more choice: all eight Phuket tours above land you on Khao Phing Kan, and they cover every boat type and budget. From Krabi, tours leave Ao Nang by speedboat and approach the bay from the south-east. The Thalassa tour we list is the standout, but it views James Bond Island from the water rather than landing, in exchange for quieter beaches and lagoons elsewhere. That trade-off is the most consistent theme in its reviews: guests repeatedly describe stops timed to miss the other boats, a lagoon shared with one other group, and lunch on a beach they had to themselves.
If you want James Bond Island and Krabi's islands on one trip from Phuket, check which Hong Island a tour visits. Most Phuket tours canoe at Koh Hong inside Phang Nga Bay. The Hong Island group in Krabi province, with its viewpoint and beach, is a separate place further south-east, and the only Phuket departure we found that combines it with James Bond Island is Amazing Canoeing's private speedboat charter.
James Bond Island Tour Price from Phuket
James Bond Island tours from Phuket cost $33 to $239 per person, with most good options between $67 and $96. The private charter in our table runs $1,761 per boat for up to 12. The figure that matters is what you pay by the end of the day: six of the eight Phuket tours add the 300 THB (about $9) park fee in cash (double on the private charter), and some add a pickup surcharge for hotels outside the main beaches. Most people don't realize the cheapest tour is also the longest: the $33 big boat lists 10 hours, against 7 to 8 for the speedboats.
Oh-Hoo's big boat tour, with lunch and two canoe segments. Add about $9 for the park fee and, from Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Laguna, Rawai or Nai Harn, 200 THB (about $6) for transfers, which brings it to roughly $42 to $48.
The three shared speedboats ($67, $68 and $90), Amazing Canoeing's big boat at $96 and Thalassa from Krabi at $125. All include lunch, a guide and hotel transfers or a free meeting point; all but Thalassa add the park fee on the day.
SEANERY's sunset cruise at $155 and ForeverVacation's private longtail at $239, both with park fees included. Groups of eight or more can also weigh Amazing Canoeing's $1,761 private speedboat, which excludes lunch and charges a double park fee.
For a first visit we would spend in the $68 to $96 band: it buys the operators with the strongest review records, includes lunch and transfers, and leaves only the park fee to pay in cash on the day.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing is that departure time matters more than the operator: guests on early longtail starts or the Krabi route describe the caves and James Bond Island with a handful of other boats, while standard mid-morning departures from Phuket arrive with the main wave.
Tips for Your James Bond Island Tour
- Bring 300 THB per adult and 150 THB per child in cash unless your tour includes the park fee. It is collected at check-in, before you board. Carry extra small notes too: guests repeatedly mention wanting cash for the canoe paddler's tip, drinks on board, the stalls at Koh Panyee and James Bond Island, and photo prints.
- Check your pickup zone before you book. Several tours charge extra from Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao, Laguna, Rawai and Nai Harn, and the far north (Nai Yang, Mai Khao) can mean a 1,500 THB private van.
- Read the email the night before. Pickup times are confirmed by email, and the single most common complaint across these tours is a missed or late pickup. The window can open more than two hours before the boat leaves, because west-coast hotels are collected first and the van crosses the island to the pier.
- Wear water shoes or sandals with grip, and expect to take them off on board. Reviewers warn that cave floors and some beaches are coral-strewn and the path on James Bond Island is steps over shingle. Some big boats and cruise boats are shoe-free, collecting everyone's footwear at boarding; one guest strapped their shoes to a backpack rather than digging through a shared bin at every stop.
- Leave your passport at the hotel and pack for getting wet. A photo of your passport on your phone is enough. Bring a towel, a change of clothes and a waterproof phone pouch: guests who skipped them list them as what they most wish they had known.
- Consider a big boat if motion bothers you. Reviewers describe speedboat rides as bumpy when the wind is up, and the May to October southwest monsoon brings rougher water. One July reviewer recommends watching the forecast and picking a calm day. Tours generally sail in rain rather than cancel; some wet-season guests found it barely dampened the day while others felt it took the shine off, so a light poncho is worth packing.
- Check the health and age limits. Oh-Hoo's speedboat tour excludes pregnant guests and advises against it with heart disease or high blood pressure, and several listings cap adult tickets at 70 to 80.
- Do not book from a cruise ship without checking. Several operators say their schedules are not reliable for cruise passengers, and one charges a 1,500 THB private transfer.
How We Selected These Tours
The Thailand Trip Insider team built this shortlist from every James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour listed for Phuket, and around 50 product listings, filtered on three things that matter more for this trip than for most: the boat, what the price leaves out, and whether recent guests are still reviewing the tour. We checked every listing against live operator data on October 7, 2026, and confirmed each tour was active and currently bookable. We then dropped any tour whose newest review was more than six months old. Two tours left out for that reason were a shared longtail small-group tour and a second big boat tour, both otherwise in the running. We kept one Krabi departure because many readers searching from Phuket are deciding between the two, and labelled it clearly. We compared price, park-fee and lunch inclusions, boat type, group size, duration, departure pier, pickup zones, review volume, the spread of star ratings and recurring review themes, reading 570 recent and critical reviews across the nine. The "Best for" labels describe the use case those attributes point to and are not a ranking by rating. To be explicit about how this page is made and paid for: we have not taken these tours ourselves, and nothing here is written as though we had. Our judgements come from operator listing data and published guest reviews. Prices quoted in Thai baht were converted at the October 7, 2026 rate and will move with the exchange rate. Booking links are affiliate links and we may earn a commission if you book through them, at no extra cost to you. No operator paid for inclusion, for a label, or for its position in the table, and commission rates played no part in the order.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a James Bond Island tour from Phuket?+
Between $33 and $239 per person, with most well-reviewed tours between $67 and $96. Six of the eight Phuket tours compared here also charge the Ao Phang Nga National Park fee of 300 THB per adult and 150 THB per child, paid in cash at the pier. The private speedboat charter we list costs $1,761 per boat for up to 12.
What is the best James Bond Island tour from Phuket?+
Amazing Canoeing's big boat and canoeing tour, at $96, is our top pick. It rates 4.9 from 5,333 reviews, includes two guided canoe stops, lunch and hotel transfers, and its big boat is steadier than a speedboat. BJ Canoeing's $68 speedboat tour is the best alternative, with 236 of 241 reviews at five stars.
Is a speedboat or big boat better for James Bond Island?+
A speedboat fits in more stops, usually including lunch at the Koh Panyee fishing village and a beach. A big boat is cheaper and steadier, which may suit travellers concerned about motion, but covers fewer islands. Both include guided sea-cave canoeing on the tours compared here.
How long is a James Bond Island tour from Phuket?+
Tours list 7 to 10 hours, but plan on 10 to 13 hours door to door. The piers are on Phuket's east and northeast coast, and pickups from Kata, Karon and Patong start as early as 6:45am, with guests often back at their hotel in the early evening.
Is it better to visit James Bond Island from Krabi or Phuket?+
Go from wherever you are staying, because the hotel transfer is already the longest part of the day. Phuket has far more tours, and every Phuket option we compared lands on the island. Krabi tours leave Ao Nang by speedboat; the top-rated one we found views James Bond Island from the water instead of landing.
Is the national park fee included in James Bond Island tours?+
Usually not. Most Phuket tours exclude the 300 THB adult and 150 THB child fee for Ao Phang Nga National Park and collect it in cash at check-in. The private longtail, the SEANERY sunset cruise and the Thalassa Krabi tour on this page include it.
Do you actually canoe yourself on a James Bond Island tour?+
On almost every tour, no. Two or three guests sit in an inflatable canoe while a local guide paddles through the sea caves and into the lagoons, often taking photos for you. It suits non-swimmers and older travellers; if you want to paddle yourself, ask the operator before booking.
Can you get close to the James Bond rock?+
No. Tours land on Khao Phing Kan, and you view and photograph Ko Tapu, the 20-metre limestone pinnacle, from its beach. Boats do not land on Ko Tapu itself. Expect a busy stop of 45 to 60 minutes with souvenir stalls along the path.
