Seven Phuket Thai cooking classes compared by area, price, group size and how hands-on the class really is, from a $57 Rawai kitchen to Blue Elephant in Phuket Town.

What You Should Know

  • A three to four hour hands-on class: a local market walk, a demonstration, then three or four dishes cooked at your own station and eaten as lunch or dinner.
  • Classes run mornings and afternoons; most schools collect you free only from nearby beaches, so the school's area matters as much as its rating.
  • Prices run $57 to $74 for the six neighbourhood schools, with Blue Elephant's Phuket Town class at $152; the meal you cook is included everywhere, and most schools also include ingredients and recipes.
  • How hands-on it is varies more than the menu: some schools have you pound curry paste by mortar and pestle, while others set out pre-made pastes and pre-chopped ingredients.

Thai Cooking Classes in Phuket

A Thai cooking class in Phuket is a half-day class in someone's working kitchen, and the single most useful thing to know before booking is that location decides more than the operator does. Most schools collect you free only from the beaches nearest them, so a top-rated class in Karon can turn into an hour of taxis from Kamala. We compare seven bookable Thai cooking classes from six neighbourhood schools plus Blue Elephant, across Karon, Kata, Patong, Kathu, Rawai and Phuket Town, so you can choose one that suits where you are staying as well as how you like to cook.

The format is broadly consistent: a guided walk around a local fresh market, a short introduction to Thai herbs and pastes, a demonstration, then three or four dishes cooked at your own station, usually a soup such as tom yum goong, a curry, a stir-fry like pad Thai, and mango sticky rice. Prices run from $57 to $74 at the neighbourhood schools and $152 for Blue Elephant's class in a Sino-Portuguese mansion in Phuket Town. A cooking class also makes a good rest day between boat trips; if you are planning those too, our James Bond Island tour comparison and Phi Phi island tour comparison cover the two big days out from Phuket. If you would rather eat than cook, our Phuket food tour comparison covers five Old Town and night tours.

What to Expect at a Phuket Cooking Class

  1. 01Before class

    Hotel pickup

If you are inside the free zone, a driver collects you ahead of the start; the time varies by hotel and school.

  2. 02First 45 min

    Fresh market walk

Your teacher explains Thai herbs, pastes and produce, usually with fruit tastings along the way.

  3. 03Arrival

    Welcome drink and ingredients

A lemongrass or herbal drink, then an introduction to the ingredients laid out at your station.

  4. 04Hands-on

    Pound the curry paste

At most schools you grind your own paste by mortar and pestle before cooking the curry.

  5. 052 hours

    Cook four dishes

Watch each dish demonstrated, then cook it at your own station: soup, curry, stir-fry and dessert.

  6. 063 to 4 hrs

    Eat and head back

Sit down to everything you made, take the leftovers, and get your recipes by email or booklet.

Most classes here follow the same basic shape. If you use hotel pickup, the driver arrives before the advertised class start; the exact time varies by hotel and school (Phuket Easy Thai Cooking, for example, collects guests 30 to 40 minutes ahead). Otherwise you meet at the school or the market. A teacher walks you through a local fresh market for 30 to 45 minutes, explaining herbs, pastes and fruit, often with tastings. Back in the kitchen you watch each dish demonstrated, cook it yourself at your own station, then sit down and eat everything you made. What typically happens is that classes run well below their listed cap: guests at several schools describe classes of two to five, and a few early sessions turned into private lessons.

Our take (how hands-on it really is): This is where schools differ most. At Chef VJ, Chef Care, House of Taste and Thai Cooking School Phuket, reviewers describe pounding their own curry paste in a mortar and pestle. Critical reviews of other classes describe plates of pre-chopped ingredients, pre-made pastes and very little prep. Neither is wrong, but if learning technique matters to you, we would choose a school where the paste is made from scratch.

Our take (pickup is the real risk): Most of the critical reviews across these seven classes are about transport rather than food: a driver who went to the wrong hotel, a pickup cancelled the day before because the hotel was outside the zone, a guest from a distant beach paying for taxis and losing three hours. Check the free pickup column against your hotel before you compare anything else.

What reviewers consistently mention

  • Far more food than expected. Four dishes is a full meal and then some; guests at most schools advise skipping the previous meal, and several schools box up leftovers to take back to your hotel.
  • The market is a highlight in its own right. Reviewers often rate the market walk as highly as the cooking, especially the fruit tasting and learning which pastes and sauces to buy for home.
  • Solo travellers fit in easily. Because everyone cooks at their own station, guests who came alone describe feeling comfortable from the start; one suggests schools introduce the group to each other at the start, which not all do.
  • You set your own spice level. Because everyone cooks their own portion, mixed groups and children can make milder versions of the same dish.
  • Kitchens can be hot. Blue Elephant's practice room and Chef VJ's kitchen are air-conditioned; one reviewer notes Phuket Easy Thai Cooking's kitchen is not, so dress for heat.

Best Thai Cooking Classes in Phuket

The seven classes below are ordered by how confidently we would recommend them to a first-time visitor. We weighted recent review volume, recurring review themes, how hands-on the cooking is, pickup convenience, group size and price rather than ranking by star rating alone, because six of the seven sit at 4.9 or 5.0 and the rating separates almost nothing.

1
Best overall$59

Phuket Thai Cooking Class by Chef VJ

Your own station, curry paste pounded by hand, an optional market tour and four start times a day from its Karon kitchen. 2,844 of its 2,897 reviews are five stars, the deepest record of any cooking class in Phuket. Recent guests describe three dishes plus a shared mango sticky rice, more food than they could finish, and leftovers boxed to take home. We'd give it the edge for first-timers because the market tour is optional: if you have already walked a Thai market, the shorter class frees up the rest of your day. The catch is pickup: free only from Kata, Kata Noi and Karon, and Patong, Rawai and Nai Harn need two or more guests on a market class.

Best for families$68

Thai Cooking School Phuket (Kata)

A family-run kitchen in Kata rated 5.0 from 826 reviews, with free pickup across Kata, Karon, Patong, Chalong and Rawai. Children from four join a parent's station, and reviews from families repeatedly mention extra helpers for young or neurodivergent kids and mango sticky rice coloured with natural dyes. Only the 10:00am lunch class includes the market; it is closed on Sundays.

3
Best in Patong$74

Chef Care

The only class we found in Patong itself, and the smallest here at four guests; we'd book this if you want something close to a private lesson, which is how its reviewers most often describe it. You shop at the market with the chef, make curry paste from scratch and cook a set menu of tom yum goong, massaman curry, pad Thai and mango sticky rice, then leave with a curry paste kit. Reviewers repeatedly describe the studio as spotless. One vegetarian reviewer describes the menu being adapted with ease when asked ahead.

Best for choosing your dishes$68

Phuket Thai Cooking Academy

Each guest picks their own four dishes from a long menu, so couples and friends can learn different recipes side by side. The kitchen is in Kathu, about 5 km from Patong, with free pickup from Patong, Kathu and Phuket Town. Its 4.8 is the lowest here, and the three-star reviews share a theme: pre-made pastes and pre-prepped ingredients that left little chopping. It is closed on Sundays. We'd look elsewhere if learning technique is the point, and book it if two of you want to cook different menus.

5
Best in Phuket Town$152

Blue Elephant Cooking School

The famous name, in a century-old Sino-Portuguese mansion on Krabi Road. You walk to the morning market, watch the chef demonstrate in a separate room, cook four dishes in an air-conditioned practice room, then eat them in the Blue Elephant restaurant with a certificate, apron and recipe booklet to take home. It costs more than twice any other class here, has no hotel pickup, and this listing needs ten guests to run.

6
Cheapest$57

Phuket Easy Thai Cooking (Rawai)

The lowest price here, with a market visit, four dishes and free pickup for two or more guests from most of the south and west coast. Guests consistently praise the teacher and the leftovers packed up to take home. One reviewer warns that the kitchen is not air-conditioned, and non-cooking companions pay 1,000 THB.

Check availability
7
Most start times$59

House of Taste (Kata)

Three classes a day, including the only 5:30pm start on this page, and a menu that changes by weekday, so you can pick the day that includes the dishes you want. You make curry paste by mortar and pestle after a walk through Kata's fresh market. Two cautions: it has only 20 reviews so far, and bookings are non-refundable.

Check availability

If two of these appeal equally, choose the one that collects you free: the cost and time of a taxi across Phuket is the most common regret in these classes' reviews, and it outweighs any difference in rating.

Cooking Classes in Patong, Phuket Town and the Beaches

Phuket's cooking schools cluster around the west-coast beaches, and pickup zones follow the schools. Start with where you are staying.

Cooking class in Patong

Chef Care runs the only class we found in Patong itself, for up to four guests, with free transfers inside the Patong area. Phuket Thai Cooking Academy is the other strong choice: its kitchen sits in Kathu, about 5 km inland, and Patong is inside its free pickup zone. Thai Cooking School Phuket and Phuket Easy Thai Cooking also collect from Patong free. Chef VJ does too, but only for two or more guests on a market class, and guests from Kamala and Surin are asked to meet at the Hard Rock Cafe in Patong.

Cooking class in Phuket Town

Blue Elephant is the Phuket Town class: it meets at the Governor's Mansion on Krabi Road, a short walk from the morning market, and has no hotel pickup, so it pairs well with an afternoon on our Phuket Old Town tour route. If you are staying in town but do not want Blue Elephant's price, Phuket Thai Cooking Academy and Phuket Easy Thai Cooking both collect free from Phuket Town.

Karon, Kata and Rawai

The south-west beaches have the most choice. Chef VJ's school is on Patak Road in Karon, and Thai Cooking School Phuket and House of Taste are in Kata, each with free pickup locally. Phuket Easy Thai Cooking is further south in Rawai. Guests staying in Bang Tao, Surin, Kamala or near the airport should expect a surcharge (300 to 600 THB per person at Phuket Easy Thai Cooking) or a meeting point instead of a hotel pickup.

Is the Blue Elephant Cooking Class in Phuket Worth It?

Blue Elephant is the best-known name in Thai cooking schools, and its Phuket class runs in the Governor's Mansion, a century-old Sino-Portuguese building in Phuket Town that also houses its restaurant. At $152 it costs about twice the next most expensive class on this page, so the question is what the extra buys.

The answer is the setting and the polish, not more cooking. You get a guided walk through the morning market, a demonstration in a separate studio room, an air-conditioned practice kitchen with your own wok, a certificate, apron, recipe booklet and souvenir products, and lunch served in the restaurant rather than at your station. You still cook four dishes, about the same as at the $57 to $74 schools. Guests who booked it as a family occasion or a special day rate it highly and say the setting justifies the price; we would book it for that reason, and choose a neighbourhood school if the cooking itself is the point. Note that there is one 9:30am class a day, no hotel pickup, and this listing needs ten guests to run.

How Much Is a Thai Cooking Class in Phuket?

Thai cooking classes in Phuket cost $57 to $74 per person at the six neighbourhood schools compared here, and $152 at Blue Elephant in Phuket Town. Every class includes the meal you cook, and most list ingredients and recipes as included too. The cost that changes the comparison is transport: free pickup covers only each school's nearby beaches, and a taxi from outside that zone can add more than the difference between two classes.

Budget$57 to $59

Phuket Easy Thai Cooking in Rawai at $57, and Chef VJ in Karon and House of Taste in Kata at $59. All three include a market walk (optional at Chef VJ) and a full meal; Chef VJ's top-rated class is in this tier.

Mid-range$68 to $74

Thai Cooking School Phuket and Phuket Thai Cooking Academy at $68, and Chef Care's four-person Patong class at $74. The premium buys wider free pickup zones, a choose-your-own menu or a much smaller group.

Premium$152

Blue Elephant in Phuket Town: the same four dishes in a historic mansion, with an air-conditioned practice room, a certificate and lunch served in the restaurant. No hotel pickup.

For most visitors we would spend $59 to $68 on a school inside your hotel's free pickup zone: the classes are close in quality, and a free ride matters more than a few dollars on the ticket.

Our Take

The pattern we keep seeing is that guests rate the class on the day, not the school: the ones who arrived hungry, inside the free pickup zone and at a class that matched how hands-on they wanted to be leave five-star reviews almost regardless of which kitchen they chose.

Tips for Your Phuket Cooking Class

  • Skip the meal before. Four dishes plus market tastings is a large meal, and reviewers at most schools say the same thing: go hungry.
  • Match the school to your hotel. Free pickup is limited to each school's nearby beaches. Chef VJ's free zone is Kata, Kata Noi and Karon, Phuket Thai Cooking Academy charges a surcharge for one or two guests outside its zone, and Phuket Easy Thai Cooking adds 300 to 600 THB from the north and west.
  • Choose the market option if you are new to Thai food. Chef VJ's class can be booked with or without the market, and Thai Cooking School Phuket includes it only on the lunch class. Reviewers new to Southeast Asian cooking consistently say it is worth the extra time.
  • Tell the school about dietary needs when you book. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal menus are offered widely, but they work best when the kitchen prepares separate ingredients in advance rather than adapting on the day.
  • Try the morning class for a smaller group. Two reviewers who took an early session ended up with a private lesson, one putting it down to fewer people wanting the first slot of the day. It is not guaranteed, but it is worth a try if a small class matters to you.
  • Bring a little cash. Several market walks give you the chance to buy pastes and sauces to take home, and one school keeps your purchases in the fridge during class.
  • Check the refund terms. Most classes here allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, but House of Taste bookings are non-refundable.
  • Remember the Sunday closures. Thai Cooking School Phuket and Phuket Thai Cooking Academy do not run on Sundays.

How We Selected These Classes

The Thailand Trip Insider team started from every Thai cooking class listed for Phuket, around 14 product listings, and narrowed them on three things that matter more for cooking classes than for most activities: where the kitchen is, how hands-on the class is, and whether recent guests are still reviewing it. We checked every listing against live operator data on October 7, 2026, and confirmed each class was active and currently bookable. We dropped any class whose newest review was more than six months old; two were left out for that reason. Several schools sell the same class under more than one listing or through resellers, so we counted each kitchen once and kept the listing with the most reviews. We then looked up where each kitchen is, because the listings name pickup zones rather than addresses. We compared price, area, pickup zones, class size, start times, ages, menu flexibility, cancellation terms, review volume, the spread of star ratings and recurring review themes, reading over 300 recent and critical reviews across the seven. The "Best for" labels describe the use case those attributes point to and are not a ranking by rating. To be explicit about how this page is made and paid for: we have not taken these classes ourselves, and nothing here is written as though we had. Our judgements come from operator listing data and published guest reviews. Prices quoted in Thai baht were converted at the October 7, 2026 rate and will move with the exchange rate. Booking links are affiliate links and we may earn a commission if you book through them, at no extra cost to you. No school paid for inclusion, for a label, or for its position in the table, and commission rates played no part in the order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Thai cooking class in Phuket?+

Chef VJ's class in Karon is our top pick: $59, rated 5.0 from 2,897 reviews, with your own station, curry paste made by hand and four start times a day. Thai Cooking School Phuket in Kata is the best alternative for families, and Chef Care is the best choice in Patong.

Between $57 and $74 per person at the neighbourhood schools compared here, and $152 at Blue Elephant in Phuket Town. Every class includes the meal you cook, and most also include ingredients and recipes. Hotel pickup is free only within each school's nearby area, so a taxi can add to the cost if you are staying further away.

Is there a Thai cooking class in Patong?+

Yes. Chef Care runs a four-person class in Patong with a market visit and free transfers within Patong. Phuket Thai Cooking Academy is about 5 km away in Kathu with free Patong pickup, and Thai Cooking School Phuket and Phuket Easy Thai Cooking also collect from Patong free.

Is the Blue Elephant cooking class in Phuket worth it?+

It is worth it for the setting rather than the cooking. You cook four dishes, the same as at the $57 to $74 schools, but in a historic mansion with an air-conditioned kitchen, a certificate and lunch in the restaurant. We would book it for a special occasion and choose a neighbourhood school otherwise.

Can children join a cooking class in Phuket?+

Yes, at most schools. Thai Cooking School Phuket and Phuket Thai Cooking Academy take children from four, sharing a parent's station, and House of Taste from three. Chef VJ's class is for ages nine and up, Chef Care's from seven and Blue Elephant's from six.

Which Thai cooking class is best for couples in Phuket?+

For a near-private class, Chef Care in Patong takes four guests at most. If you want to learn different dishes, Phuket Thai Cooking Academy lets each person choose their own four. Chef VJ suits couples who prefer a livelier group with four start times a day, and Blue Elephant suits a special occasion.

Most do, but only from nearby areas, and classes last three to four hours plus travel. Blue Elephant has no pickup.
