The best Phuket Old Town tours compared: small-group food and heritage walks from $59 and half-day city tours from $45, plus a free self-guided walking route with a map.
What You Should Know
- Phuket Old Town is the historic core of Phuket Town on the island's east side: a grid of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Chinese shrines and markets around Thalang, Krabi, Dibuk and Phang Nga roads.
- Most guided tours here are food tours. The best-reviewed run about four hours on foot, cap groups at eight, and cost $59 to $65 with 10 to 15+ tastings. Meeting points are in town, so hotel transfers are not included.
- Free walking tour: no current tip-based free walking tour found in Phuket. Best free alternative: our 2.3 km self-guided route below, covering seven stops.
- Thalang Road turns into the Sunday walking street market from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, a good time to walk the old town for street food but a crowded one for photos.
- Go hungry and expect heat. Guests on every food tour here say the tastings add up to more than a full meal, and that the walking between stops is hot. Groups are often far smaller than the cap: many guests had the guide to themselves or shared with one other couple.
Phuket Old Town Tours: What You Can Book
A Phuket Old Town tour means a few hours on foot in Phuket Town, the island's historic trading centre, a world away from the beach resorts. The streets are lined with restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Chinese shrines and family-run kitchens serving the island's Peranakan, Chinese and southern Thai food.
There are three ways to see it. A guided Phuket Old Town food tour is the most popular, with small groups eating their way around the market and backstreets. A guided food and heritage walking tour or a half-day city tour adds history, museums or temples. Or you can walk it yourself for free with our self-guided walking tour map. For a deeper comparison of the food tours alone, including menus and diet rules, see our Phuket food tour guide. If you want to cook what you taste, our Thai cooking class comparison includes Blue Elephant's school in Phuket Town. For other half-day trips, our comparisons of ATV tours to the Big Buddha, Phuket zipline parks and elephant sanctuaries cover the island's outdoor side.
A Chef's Tour: Southern Flavors Phuket Food Tour
15+ tastings over four hours with groups capped at eight and six morning start times; the most-reviewed Old Town tour, with 2,138 of 2,161 ratings at five stars.

Expect three and a half to four hours on foot, mostly in the heat, with plenty of food. The two A Chef's Tour listings say they run in all weather, so bring an umbrella in the rainy season. Most guests find the guide matters more than the route: the same streets earn five stars with an engaged guide and one star with a distracted one, which is why we lean toward the operators with long review records. Dietary flexibility varies: Southern Flavors caters for vegetarians and pescatarians with a few fewer tastings, while Baba Tastes cannot cater for them at all. Our Phuket food tour guide compares the food tours in more depth.
The Best Phuket Old Town Tours, Reviewed
Four of these six are on foot in the old town itself; the other two use a van to add sights further out. Food dominates the list because that is what the old town's best-reviewed guides do. Beyond the listing facts, we weighed what guests say decides the day: the guide, the portions, and how much of the time is actually spent in the old town.
A Chef's Tour: Southern Flavors Food Tour
The most-reviewed tour in Phuket Old Town: four hours on foot with 15+ tastings of the island's Chinese, Malay and southern Thai food, starting from the Ranong Road central market. Groups are capped at eight, and six morning start times make it easy to fit in. Vegetarians and pescatarians can join with two or three fewer tastings. 2,138 of its 2,161 ratings are five stars. Guests repeatedly warn that the portions are generous enough to skip breakfast, mention Michelin-listed stops among the family-run kitchens, and often found their group was just two to four people. Expect heat between stops: the shops are open-fronted rather than air-conditioned.
Check availabilityA Chef's Tour: Baba Tastes
The same company's afternoon tour, starting at 3:00pm or 3:30pm from Jui Tui Shrine, with 15+ tastings and the same eight-guest cap. The listing is explicit that it does not suit vegetarians, pescatarians, no-pork diets, or shellfish, peanut or severe allergies, because of what the street vendors sell. Guests describe the same small groups and generous portions as the morning tour; on Sundays the route overlaps the Thalang Road walking street, which one large group found crowded but lively.
Check availabilityJane's Food Tour and City Walk
Run by the team behind Phuket Thai Cooking Class by Chef VJ: a 10:30am walk from the Ranong Road fresh market with brunch, local drinks and museum visits woven into the food stops. Groups are capped at eight. 131 of its 132 ratings are five stars, but read that with care: many of the reviews on this listing describe the same company's cooking class, so the rating is not purely the food walk. Guests who did the walk describe about five food stops ending with ice cream, a chance to cook a Phuket pancake, and groups small enough to feel private.
Check availabilitySecret Food Tours
A 3.5-hour morning tour with a listed menu: dim sum, popiah spring rolls, moo hong pork belly, kaeng som soup, tao sor bean buns, o aew shaved ice and a secret dish, plus a local beer. The route includes Michelin Guide stalls and a fourth-generation bakery. It has only 12 reviews so far, and the one-star review shows the risk of a small track record: a group of 13 felt the guide focused on part of the group. Other guests praise guides who swapped in a new stop when a shop was closed, and one found two of the stalls sold out when they went back that afternoon.
Check availabilityMega Tour Phuket: Half-Day City Tour
A van tour with hotel pickup that pairs the old town with Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha viewpoint, plus A-Pong pancakes, pao lang sticky rice and lunch at Mee Ton Poe. It covers the most ground, but only part of the day is in the old town: guests repeatedly put the Old Town stop at 40 minutes to an hour. With several hotel pickups the day can stretch to eight or nine hours door to door, some guests did not get the snacks the listing promises, and a cashew factory stop is sometimes added. Its rating is more mixed than the food tours: 55 of 569 ratings are three stars or lower.
Check availabilityKRIS TRAVEL: Night Street Food Walking Tour
A private 5:00pm tour with hotel pickup that starts at Saphan Hin waterfront park, visits a Chinese shrine, walks the old town after dark and ends at Chillva Market, with dinner included. It is the priciest option here and the least focused on the old town itself. Guests who went on a Sunday loved pairing it with the walking street market, but two of its four 2026 reviews are one star, describing guides who chose the food themselves or served very little of it. It is the riskiest booking on this page.

Free walking tour of Phuket Old Town: no current tip-based free walking tour found. Best free alternative: our 2.3 km self-guided route below.
This loop links seven of the old town's best-known stops in about 2.3 km, roughly 30 minutes of walking without stops; allow two to three hours with time inside and for coffee.
| Stop | What it is | Walk to next stop |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Jui Tui Shrine | Chinese shrine on Soi Phuthorn, at the western edge of the old town | ~500 m |
| 2. Chinpracha House | Historic family mansion on Krabi Road, open as a house museum | ~420 m |
| 3. Phuket Thai Hua Museum | Museum in the old Thai Hua school building on Krabi Road | ~380 m |
| 4. Soi Romanee | Narrow lane of restored, brightly painted shophouses | ~390 m |
| 5. Thalang Road | The old town's main shophouse street, and the Sunday walking street market | ~510 m |
| 6. The Memory at On On Hotel | Historic hotel building on Phang Nga Road | ~90 m |
| 7. Shrine of the Serene Light | Chinese shrine set back in a courtyard off Phang Nga Road | End |
Phuket Old Town walking route at a glance
| Start | Jui Tui Shrine on Soi Phuthorn, about 300 m from the Ranong Road market, where the blue buses from the beaches stop |
| Direction | West to east as mapped: up to Krabi Road, along to Soi Romanee and Thalang Road, then back west along Phang Nga Road |
| Distance and time | About 2.3 km and 30 minutes of walking; allow two to three hours with stops, longest at the two museums |
| Best time | Early morning before the heat, or from about 4:00pm; Sunday from 4:00pm for the walking street market, weekday mornings for quiet streets and photos |
| Where to eat | The Ranong Road market near the start, the cafes and shophouse restaurants along Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, or the street food stalls on Sunday evenings |
| Finish | Shrine of the Serene Light off Phang Nga Road, about 200 m from the Ranong Road market |
| Getting back to the beaches | Blue songthaew buses leave from the Ranong Road market for Patong, Karon and Kata (about 30 THB, roughly 6:00am to 6:00pm). By taxi or ride-hail it is about 16 km to Patong, 19 km to Karon and 16 km to Kata, roughly 35 to 45 minutes without traffic |
| Parking | Old Town streets are narrow and one-way, and parking is tight. A municipal car park on Damrong Road is reported at about 30 to 50 THB for a few hours; arriving by bus, taxi or ride-hail is easier |
Walking distances come from a mapped walking route and are approximate. The extra pin marks where the morning food tours meet, if you want to combine a guided tour with a wander of your own. We'd pair the loop with a morning food tour: the food tours end in the old town, so you can walk it straight afterwards, though after 15+ tastings you may want the shrines before the cafes.
Phuket Sunday Walking Street Market (Lard Yai) on Thalang Road
The Phuket Sunday Walking Street, known locally as Lard Yai, is the old town's weekly night market. Every Sunday from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, Thalang Road closes to traffic and fills with street food stalls, handicrafts, clothing and occasional live music or dance along its length and into the side lanes. Entry is free; you pay only for what you eat or buy.
| When | Sundays only, 4:00pm to 10:00pm |
| Where | Thalang Road and its side lanes, stop 5 on our walking map |
| Cost | Free entry |
| How long | At least an hour to walk it properly |
| Best time | Arrive near 4:00pm for photos of the shophouses before the crowds; it is at full capacity by about 6:00pm |
It is the liveliest time to see the old town, and the easiest way to combine it with a tour is to book an afternoon or evening food tour that falls on a Sunday: guests on both A Chef's Tour's Baba Tastes and KRIS TRAVEL's night tour describe the walking street as a highlight, though one group found it crowded. The blue buses back to the beaches stop around 6:00pm, so plan a taxi or ride-hail for the return.
How Much Does a Phuket Old Town Tour Cost?
Guided Phuket Old Town tours cost $45 to $98 per person on the tours we compared, and walking it yourself is free. The food tours are the best value for most people, because the tastings add up to a full meal. We think the tradeoff is transport: the on-foot tours give you the most time in the old town but you pay your own taxi, while the van tours include pickup at the cost of a long day and a short Old Town stop.
Self-guided walk
Use our walking map and pay only for food, drinks and any museum entry you choose.
On foot in the old town
A Chef's Tour's two food tours and Jane's food and heritage walk ($59), and Secret Food Tours ($65). No hotel transfer.
Van or private car
Mega Tour's half-day city tour with pickup and lunch ($45), and KRIS TRAVEL's private evening tour with dinner ($98).
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing in these reviews is that the old town is best seen at walking pace with food as the excuse. The on-foot food tours draw near-perfect ratings, while the van tours lose stars mostly for how little time they leave in the old town itself.
Tips for Visiting Phuket Old Town
- Plan your own transport. The on-foot tours meet in town and do not include hotel transfers, so budget for a taxi or ride-hail from the beaches.
- Go hungry on a food tour. 10 to 15+ tastings add up to a full meal, and guests say you do not have to finish every plate: pace yourself for dessert.
- Book a Sunday evening tour for the walking street. Evening and afternoon tours that fall on a Sunday overlap the Thalang Road market, which guests rate as a highlight.
- Choose a walking tour if the old town is the point. On the van tours, guests say the Old Town stop lasts under an hour.
- Check the diet rules before booking. Baba Tastes cannot cater for vegetarians, pescatarians, no-pork diets or severe allergies; Southern Flavors and Secret Food Tours ask for dietary needs in advance.
- Visit on a Sunday evening for the Thalang Road walking street, or early on a weekday for quieter streets.
- Dress for temples. Cover shoulders and knees for shrines and temples, especially on tours that visit Wat Chalong.
- Bring an umbrella in the rainy season; the walking tours run rain or shine.
How We Selected These Tours
We scanned more than 800 tours departing Phuket for Old Town food, walking and city tours, and kept those with strong ratings and reviews from the last six months. We dropped four food tours whose newest reviews were older than that. We then picked the best option for each type of trip: morning and afternoon food tours, a food and heritage walk, a Michelin-focused food tour, a city tour and an evening tour. We did not find a well-reviewed guided walking tour without food, which is one reason we built the free self-guided map.
Prices, ratings, review counts, durations, start times, group sizes, meeting points and inclusions come from each operator's current listing. Map locations come from OpenStreetMap, walking and driving distances from mapped routes, and bus fares and parking from published local guides. Prices set in Thai baht were converted at the October 8, 2026 exchange rate.
We have not taken these tours ourselves; our judgments come from current operator listings and published guest reviews. Guest observations come from reading each tour's recent and low-rated reviews, 178 in total, pulled on October 8, 2026, and we report a theme only when more than one review mentions it.
